Abstract

Since 1950¢¥s, the concept of the coronary prone type A behavior pattern has been introduced and many retrospective and prospective studies support the causal relationship between the type A behavior pattern and coronary heart The main purpose of this study is to identify such a relationship among Koreans.
The purposes are:
1) to identify the specific characteristics of the type A behavior pattern;
2) to identify the relationship between the general indices and the type A behavior pattern;
3) to examine the relationship between the type A behavior pattern and the prevalence of the coronary heart disease;
4) to evaluate the predictability of type A behavior to the prevalence of the coronary heart disease.
A self-administered measurement tool composed of 59 items was made through modifications of Jenkins Activity Survey. Subjects were 200 individuals including 100 patients having coronary heart disease and 100 normal individuals.
The Varimax Factor Analysis, ANOVA, Discriminant Analysis, Pearson¢¥s Correlation were used to analyze the data from 200 subjects. The 42 items were chosen with items above 0.3 of the factor loading in the factor analysis.
In the first factor analysis 18 factors were extracted and accounted for 66% of the total variance. However, when the number of factors were limited to 3 in order to derive Jenkins¢¥ classification, three factors were derived. Their names are Hard-driving, Speed & Impatience. Each of them includes 18 items, 15, and 9, respectively.
Scores of the patient group in the type A behavior were higher than those of the normal individuals at 5% level.
The type A behavior questionnaire with 42 items could discriminate the prevalence of the coronary heart disease by 64%. The factor Speed & Impatience including 9 items also discriminate the prevalence by 64.5%.
These results indicate that modified Jenkins¢¥ type A behavior questionnaire with 42 items can be utilized effectively with Korean subjects.
